2012 Mountain Plains Museum Association Conference

Bianca and Michael are back from a successful and enjoyable trip to the 2012 Mountain Plains Museum Association Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The conference provided great opportunities to meet new people and learn about the latest issues and solutions in the museum world, as well as some interesting vendors and services in the exhibit hall.

Best of all though was the chance to catch up with old friends and clients.   This year we were delighted to get to spend some time with the following people with whom we've had the pleasure of working with in the past:

Georgia Hansen, Executive Director of the Aspen Historical Society

Shan Rankin, Executive Director and Lisa Adams, Registrar & Curator of Artifacts from The Museum of South Texas History

Karen Reinhart, Curator of Education and Outreach from the Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum

Art Wolf of Wolf Consulting

And last but certainly not least,  the State Historical Society of North Dakota was represented by a number of old friends including, Chris Johnson, Director, Museum Division, Genia Hesser, Curator of Exhibits, Jenny Yearous, Curator of Collections Management as well as several other familiar faces.

All in all it was a great experience.  We send a huge congratulations and thanks to Monta Lee Dakin, Hillary English and the rest of the MPMA team for a truly fantastic event.

Following are few scenes from the conference to give a sense of what we experienced.

The Corpus Christi waterfront walk with the USS Lexington in the background.
Delegates board the USS Lexington for one of the evening events.
The AAID booth in the exhibit hall. Our custom mixed tea was a big hit.
Corpus Christi is home to the original Whataburger so Michael had to eat there for "historical reasons"

Congratulations Wille!

We were very excited to receive this email from Shannon sharing the news about our dear friend Willie Johnson from Ziibiwing! What a thrill to see you honored for your hard work! Well deserved!  Three cheers too for Ana!  Your nomination was obviously superbly written!

Boozhoo,
On behalf of the Ziibiwing Center’s board of directors and staff, I would like to announce that our very own Willie Johnson received a “Distinguished Professional Service” award from the Historical Society of Michigan. Willie was recognized at the State History Awards gala held on Friday, September 28 in Monroe, Michigan. The award cited Willie’s exceptional and lifelong dedication to local history. (An official Press Release will be forthcoming.)

The award nomination was initiated by his daughter, Ana. She approached Ziibiwing and asked for our assistance to help her compile, complete and submit all of the nomination materials. Below is an excerpt from the nomination narrative that Willie’s loving and thoughtful daughter wrote about her dad:

“Willie has determined that his work will not only bring knowledge and understanding to the State of Michigan and all people, but healing as well. For as long as there has been excavation, the remains of the first peoples of Michigan have been removed from their resting places, studied and either put on display or boxes in storage rooms. Resolute to see his ancestors brought home and be given a traditional reburial, Willie and his staff have worked with numerous museums and colleges across the State and U.S.  to repatriate ancestral human remains and funerary artifacts.”

Please join me in congratulating the very Distinguished William Johnson!

Me’ewe.
