Wanapum Journey of Design and Fabrication: Chiawana Gallery

Both a place of peace and a break in intensity of the exhibit and the modern world.  This gallery offers a refuge and the opportunity for grounding.  Chiawana means River People, which the Wanapum are.  Natural materials, including a basalt floor and a wood bench furnished by the river, provide a quiet refuge to contemplate a vista of the hills above the river beyond Whale Island.  From a front row seat, the view changes from season to season and according to the time of day and the weather.  Dedicated to the children, the gallery honors the natural world that provided the Wanapum with everything they needed to survive - physically and spiritually.
