Wanapum Journey of Design and Fabrication: Newcomers

As a cost saving measure and green initiative, a showcase, recycled from the old center, was retrofitted to house historic objects that made significant impacts both, positive and negative, on the day-to-day activities of the Wanapum.  The gallery aesthetic took its cue’s from the structures that had huge, life-changing impacts on the Wanapum from the 1950’s onward; the two dams built on their ancestral homeland that, maybe forever, limited and changed their traditional relationship with the river, the seasons and their mobility.  Somber bare concrete, metal, and glass are the predominant finishes in a gallery that shows the effects of the two other life-changing effects on the Wanapum and their homeland; the imposition of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and the Yakima Training Range.  This point is driven home by a razor wire topped chainlink fence posted with signs attempting to separate the Wanapum from their homeland.
